Washington D.C. is known for breeding young, black, and persistent entrepreneurs; whether they specialize in photograpy, club promotion, culinary arts, nail and hair, make-up, image consultant, painting, fashion design, or music. I have had the privilege of meeting several of these individuals during my 2 years in the DMV area and the word that describe my feeling is flabbergasted! Each has had a positive impact on my creative and cultural lifestyle. During my first year of teaching middle school in Rockville, MD I met Khalila White. My first impressions of her included original, genuine, laid-back, and fashionable. Khalila is a native of D.C. Immediately we began to explore the city where she introduced me to the artsy and poetic culture. One evening as we visited the African Art Smithsonian Museum, we started to discuss our future plans. She begin to mention K. White Collection. I was confused. Never heard of it. Later in the conversation, I realized that she was the founder of K. White Collection. She specializes in custom handbags, applique tee shirts, and photography. For handbags, she designs a variety of styles- clutches, evening bags, gym bags, and totes. Every woman needs a handbag for every occasion. All of her handbags are hand-stitched and designed with an assortment of color and printed textiles (i.e. leather, African print). Khalila has established a trendy name for herself in the area. I've had the privelage of supporting and attending a few of her events held at local spots in Washington D.C. Her latest event was Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at the Policy Restaurant & Lounge on 1904 14th Street NW Washington D.C. She collaborated with ArtOfficial Intelligence (AIO) Clothing Company as they hosted the release of their Fall 2010 clothing line. A 2006 graduate of North Carolina A&T, Khalila has always had a drive for fashion. At age 7, her mother taught her how to sew which created the foundation of her future business- K. White Collection & Photography. Her designs are inspired by her love for peace and humanity. The motto "Love Your Fabric" was designed to inspire every woman to love the skin their in and appreciate their individuality through fashion. Fashion sends a message, so don't be afraid to go after all you dream of. Do you love your fabric? For more information about K. White Collection & Photography visit http://www.kwhitecollection.com/.
