Discovering Your Personal Style

Tracy Reese, Passion Fruit Embroidered Cummerbund Chemise

One of the first steps to becoming a true fashionista is understanding your personal style. When I make the statement of having a personal style, I mean owning a look that defines who you are as an individual. It's about knowing what you like and do not like when it comes to fashion. For example, if your favorite retailer has started selling acid wash jeans, will you buy them because you like the design or because they are suppose to be the latest trend?

To achieve your personal style, you need to take the following steps:

1. Understand your body type! Are you an apple, pear, hourglass or toothpick? Once you discover your body type, you should purchase clothing that will compliment your shape.

2. Get a few magazines and cut out pictures of the items you want. This will steer you in the right direction and you will discover what appeals to you!

3. Consider your lifestyle when you are thinking of your personal style. For example, do you work in a corporate environment; do you like to travel; or do you have kids? These are the questions you have to ask before you buy a sequin blouse from Forever 21.

4. Lastly, discovering your personal style doesn't stop at what you wear! You have to consider your hair, make - up, shoes, handbags and scent! Do you like to wear your hair in a classic bob or a daring mohawk?

Discovering your personal style can be fun and exciting! So get started with those few tips and find inspiration from celebrities and retailers. But please do not look like a carbon copy (or clone) of what's in the media!

Not matter what's your personal style, fashion is about having fun and experimenting. So go out and create a look that's all about you!
