Lyssa Hargove, 34, was born in Brooklyn, New York. Currently, she is a resident of the DMV area. Her hobbies including spending time with her family, reading, yoga, and of course, fashion. In addition, she holds a Congressional Fellow position for a Member of Congress. It was a delight to interview Lyssa for her feature as Natural Diva of the Month. She had her last relaxer in March 2004, which has been 6 years. I also must add that Lyssa is a proud member of the illustrious Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Why do you love fashion: Growing up, I had two older sisters and a mom who was a hairstylist...it was hard to avoid it. Attending HS in Manhattan also exposed me to a variety of different styles on the NYC subways--from the Wall Streeter to the skate boarder....I appreciated all the styles I saw on a daily basis.
What inspired you to become natural: Lauryn Hill and many fab natural divas were my inspiration. I LOVED Lauryn circa '98-'99. Every outfit she wore was that much more fly because of her natural big hair---I couldn't get enough of it. And I also appreciated it because before then a lot of the natural sisters who gained positive attention in the mainstream and even in our own communities were a certain texture, and I could always look to Lauryn and relate. I decided to stop my relationship with the creamy crack in 2004 and haven't looked back since---there were a few temptations to turn back but happy to say I never did.
Products you use on your hair: I love oils on my hair--EVOO and coconut oil I always seem to keep around. I am a product junkie so I have everything from Jane Carter to Carol's Daughter in my arsenal. Right now I am also checking out Sacred Products which I get at Selah & Co. Salon @t 2441 St. Paul St. Baltimore, MD 21217(www.selahandco.com). I love their shampoo-it is delicious.
Natural Hair Quote: "If you weren't fly before with a relaxer, don't expect that to change when you go natural."
