Natural Hair Contributing Editor: Simbi Animashaun

Growing up as the only "girl" in her family had its advantages and disadvantages for this NATURAL BEAUTY who was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. Although her brothers attempted to rough up her up through their constant motives to turn her into a tomboy, she was able to look past their motives and turned to the world of fashion as an escape.

At the tender age of 14, Simbi Animashaun began to wear high heels, make-up, designer clothes, jewelry, and handbags. Her sense of style was definitely different from that of her peers. At age 16, she joined a modeling troupe at the local youth community center in her neighborhood. That same year, she joined the drill team at her high school. Here, she was able to join her love for fashion with dance. She would enhance the beauty of her dance-mates with M.A.C products.

In 2002, she attended Savannah State University, where she became a member of the sophisticated Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. "Dress to impress" was the motto for every girl who possessed the "pretty girl" mentality. Later she transferred to Armstrong Atlantic State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Middle School English and Mathematics in 2006. Two years later, she earned a Master of Education. Weighing her career options, she decided to take a middle school teaching position in Maryland. Currently, she is entering her fourth year of teaching and pursuing an Administration & Supervision certification at McDaniel College.

Trying to juggle her job as a teacher, pursuing a higher education certification, mentoring and sponsoring a youth group for girls, exercising, traveling, and working part-time at a fitness center took a lot of her time and she was unable to keep her hair maintained (including the change of climate). All of these factors would inspire her to become natural.

Why natural? Eliminating the use of lye chemicals on her hair and scalp caused a change in her attitude towards life. "I felt free. I felt illuminating. I felt in charge." she says. As she embarks on her natural journey, she has come in contact with many young women that are embarking on that same journey. Her favorite products include products by Cantu-Shea Butter- Natural Hair: Moisturizing Cream Shampoo & Leave in Conditioner, Super Shine Hair Silk, and No Drip Hair & Scalp Oil.

Naturally speaking, she believes that many consider natural hair to be unprofessional, embarrassing, not classy, and unbecoming of beauty due to society's norms on what beauty should look like. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Therefore, since she has defined her individual beauty, she has taken charge of her natural hair and taken charge of her life.
